During our stopover at Heathrow last week it occurred to me that there are closer connections between certain kinds of buildings one finds in the UK and those in South Africa, than the buildings of Scandinavia or the European continent. More than the architectural aspects, I’m specifically thinking of a particular kind of atmosphere: The brickwork, the kind of paint used – how they affect what it feels like to walk through their corridors. It’s the colonial history of course. Obviously not in all buildings and places, but clear in a town like Grahamstown, and types such as school buildings and universities.
